Hi, I’m Carter. I’m a graduate student at the University of Ottawa studying under Martin Bouchard and Rafik Goubran (Carleton University). My research involves the use of pressure-sensitive mats installed underneath beds at the Sleep Disorders Clinic at the Royal in Ottawa, Canada. I’m currently finishing my thesis and looking for employment in Ottawa for late August/September.

Using Temporal Convolutional networks we demonstrate that pressure sensor arrays installed underneath a mattress can produce competitive results compared to on mattress arrays with significantly more sensors in body position classification and sleep-wake classification. This work demonstrates the potential for pressure-sensitive mats to be a cost-efficient mean of assesing sleep while reducing patient burden and workload of specialized staff.
